Remembering the Corcoran Gallery of Art: The 44th Biennial Exhibition Painting Outside of Painting
With the early announcement of the proposed merger plan for the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Corcoran College of Art and Design with the National Gallery of Art and the George Washington University, respectively, it seemed like an appropriate time to reflect on past exhibitions, the opening receptions, and charitable art auctions. Of the exhibitions, the most memorable is that of Painting Outside of Painting: the 44th Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting.
The 44th Biennial was organized by Terrie Sultan, then Curator of Contemporary Art, a position she held for 12 years, arriving from the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. While at the Corcoran Ms. Sultan organized exhibitions featuring artists of national and international scope and introduced the work of emerging artists, often providing them with their first museum exposure. Ms. Sultan was named Director of the Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston upon leaving the Corcoran in June 2000 and is now Director of the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York.
