Home Depot Partners in Disaster Recovery and Increases Sales
With Hurricane Sandy, FEMA was positioned to expand the launch of a new public-private sector clearinghouse, the National Business Emergency Operation Center (NBEOC). The goal of the NBEOC is to engage private sector and other stakeholders whose resources, capabilities, and expertise can contribute to a disaster response and recovery effort to accelerate a community’s return to normal operation.
During the early phase of Hurricane Sandy recovery, as residents began to apply for disaster assistance, FEMA began to announce the availability of Hazard Mitigation Specialists on-site at home improvement stores, Home Depot and Lowes, to discuss rebuilding techniques. For example, the News Release from November 23, 2012: Free Advice on Rebuilding Stronger, Safer, Smarter At New Jersey Home Improvement Stores. In December there were several News Releases titled, More Free Advice on Building Stronger, Safer, Smarter and in February, Specialists Provide Free Repair and Rebuilding Advice.
Home Depot quickly began to realize increased sales resulting from assisting in the recovery effort, noting that sales and revenue growth at the end-of-the year 4th quarter 2012 was attributed to customers purchasing products for repairing and rebuilding in the New Jersey and New York regions due to Hurricane Sandy. A February 26 Daily Finance article reported, Home Depot Sees Huge Sales Boost From Hurricane Sandy.
There was also a late February news announcement and banner of a new Home Depot satellite Design Center opening in Seaside Heights. During the grand opening in March, Governor Chris Christie remarked, “The newly-opened Home Depot satellite location in Seaside Heights will play a “central” part in helping local barrier island residents recover from Superstorm Sandy. Home Depot is going to be a place that is central to providing us with the supplies we need to make the recovery real and the assistance that we need to help folks get their work done as quickly as possible.”
It appears that FEMA has demonstrated how NBEOC partners can benefit from an involvement in a disaster response and recovery operation.
